Norse Mythology
Apart from Roman and Greek mythology, Western civilisation has also had major influences of Germanic and Norse Mythology.
In English, e.g., five days of the week get their names from Germanic and Norse deities:
- Tuesday = Tiu's day (Tiu is another name for Tyr),
- Wednesday = Wodan's day (Germanic name for Odin),
- Thursday = Thor's day,
- Friday = Frey or Frigg ('s) day,
- Saturday = Sataere's day.
Still, it is surprising that so little of the Norse and Germanic mythology is part of our common daily knowledge...
Credits: a lot of the information on Norse mythology was copied from a text by Nicole Cherry, "A short overview of Norse Beings."
